Sada Borneo – The Sound of Borneo
By PJ
I was a photographer for one event in USM when I first saw Hallan performed with his Sape’. Being the only Kenyah in USM that time (I think), I was over the moon, hearing the beautiful tune he played that reminds me of my long house, my origin. After Jerry Kamit’s performance the year before, his performance was one of many that I remember well. Years gone by, I graduated and then I heard he’s got a band – Sada Borneo.
When I first saw this band, they remind me of a K-pop band, because of their numbers – 11 members. It got me thinking, what musical instrument will each member play? But the similarity stops at the members number. Their music concept are totally different. Even different from other musicians or artists we have here in Malaysia. For me, this is something interesting and refreshing.
Lead by Hallan Hashim (24), Sada Borneo includes member, Will (24), Alvin (24), Hilmi Isa (24), Allister (21), Julian Frederick (21), Nick Fadriel (21), Glenn (21), Tommy (21), Hariz (21) and Bob Harris (21). Sada Borneo, despite the name which means The Sound of Borneo – is actually a band consist of east and west Malaysian students from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang. According to them, Sada Borneo emphasizes on modernizing and creating new yet melodic instrumental songs by traditional instruments, in which consists of western, traditional and nature elements featuring Sape’.

Obviously not a mainstream band, Sada Borneo was founded in 2013. But the members have known each other way before. Hallan and Wilker met during their first year in university in 2011. Having the same interest and passion in music, this duo work and performed together for various events in USM like Malam Bumi Kenyalang (MBK); a Sarawak cultural night organized by USM Sarawak society – Perkumpulan Anak-anak Sarawak. Couple of years later, they were invited again to perform for the same event and that’s when Sada Borneo started.
Knowing they can do much more, in 2014, Sada Borneo started to expand and apart from major events in USM, they also performed for Pesta Gawai & Kaamatan 2014 which was organized by Penang state government with collaboration from churches around Penang and Malaysia Borneo community. And just recently, they performed at AIESEC Malaysian Night in USM Penang – which I think is a very awesome way to share our traditional music with others.

This year, they’ve released their first single, Sada Borneo – which available in iTunes and Amazon.

They’ve also released an MV for that song which is available in their Facebook page and You Tube.
One might think 11 different musical instruments might be too much but believe me, Sada Borneo is nothing but perfection. My favorite part of the song is when Andi Siti made an appearance. Her voice and the combination of great melodies by different musical instrument head by Hallan’s Sape’ is very captivating.
In a very short time, I think they did very well. Very, very well. Not just for their own record – producing singles and performing everywhere but also in bringing our music out there.

I leave you guys with this calming music by Sada Borneo. Till next time !
